Buffy the Vampire Slayer picks up where the 1992 movie of the same name left off. The show centers on Buffy Summers, a teenager who moves to the seemingly idyllic California suburb Sunnydale. Despite her wish that leaving her hometown of Los Angeles would also leave her vampire-slaying behind, Buffy discovers that Sunnydale is in fact the Hellmouth - a portal to the underworld and all things evil. With the help of her watcher Giles (Little Britain's Anthony Head), she trains physically and mentally to take on all kinds of demons and monsters in addition to slaying the bloodthirsty vampires that roam Sunnydale every night. Buffy is accompanied a closely knit group of friends dubbed "The Scooby Gang" which includes shy Willow (How I Met Your Mother's Alyson Hannigan) who has a love for the dark arts and cocky but kind Xander (Nicholas Brendon of Unholy). With its witty writing, a healthy dose of teenage drama, and the universal theme of good vs. evil, Buffy the Vampire Slayer quickly gained popularity and still maintains a large and devoted following.
