Ask InstantCast: What is a Comp Card?

comp card Q: I want to start modeling, but I've been told I need something called a comp card. I know it's like a headshot, but I was wondering how do I make one and who should Igive it to?

A: A comp card is industry shorthand for "composition sheet" and is also commonly known as a "zed card." These are indispensable for an aspiring model. Comp cards are generally 5 x 7 inches and are used by models and agents in applications for photo shoots. The front side is composed of a clear headshot on the front, and two or more different photos on the back. The photos on the back should represent the kind of style you'd like photographers to see from you, ranging from high school athlete to working mother. You can represent as many styles as you feel you can pull off.

You have several options for getting started with your first comp card. The head shot should be standard, but odds are if you're new you don't have a modeling portfolio yet. A portfolio has sample photos and tear sheets, copies of print ads you've appeared in. You can contact a professional photographer to produce ad-like shots, and if you don't know of anyone you can contact a local branch of The American Society of Media Photographers, but this might be expensive.

You can cut costs by hiring a photographer's assistant or a photography student to take the pictures. Or you can have a friend or family member take the shots. Be creative but try to make the photos looks as much like real advertisements as possible while demonstrating the type or style you want. If you take the pictures yourself using a reflector card for focused lighting can add a level of professionalism.

Once you've made your comp card you can start sending it out or send some to your agents for distribution. Just make sure that your card fits the size specifications of the agent or casting director you are sending it to.
