How to Walk the Runway like a Supermodel

modeling expert Q: I want to become a supermodel. I love to watch fashion shows and I even like to practice my walk at home. How can I walk like a real supermodel on the runway?

A: Learning how to walk on the runway is important if you want to become a real supermodel. Just like anything else, you have to practice to get it right.

Here are a few things to remember in order to make your runway walk its very best:

  1. Shoulders back - Your posture is one of the most important things to note. You don't want to slouch or look sloppy. Keep your shoulders back and your hips slightly forward.

  2. Walk a straight line - Put one foot in front of the other. This may seem unnatural, but it'll give you that classic swing. Keep your toes forward and walk briskly.

  3. Pick a focal point - Make sure you're looking straight ahead. Don't look down or look around at the room. Chin up, eyes forward, and when you turn, let your body turn first, then your head should follow.

  4. Practice in heels - If you're not used to walking in heels, try a shorter heel and work your way up. Then, you'll feel and look more confident on the runway. Also, try and walk on the ball of your foot. This will not only help you to not slip on new heels, but will ground you better.

  5. Do your homework - The best way to learn how to become a pro is to watch the pros in action. Find out when fashion shows are coming to your town, or watch them on TV. You'll be surprised what you notice when you're paying attention to supermodel techniques.

Most importantly, practice. The only way you'll perfect your runway strut is to do it as much as you can. Practicing will help you to strengthen your walk and your confidence.

Q:

I finally attended an audition last week. I studied my monologue for a few days and was ready to show them my talent. Then, when the casting director called me in to perform, they took one look at me and gave me a whole different monologue to read ice cold! I was so nervous an unprepared that I blew it. How can I better prepare for a cold read next time?

A:

A cold read can be a scary thing. You've never read the script in your life, so how can you give your best performance? Well, you don't have to...
