Q: I just recently signed with an agent and I have lots of questions. I often send emails to get information to him but sometimes he won't respond. I would like to call him to see what I need to be doing, but I'm afraid I might be calling too often or when it is not necessary to call. Are there guidelines about when and when not to call your agent?
A: Congratulations on getting an agent! The key to a successful agent-client relationship in communication. You can't afford to be shy. If you want to get work, you need to prove to your agent that you are committed to your work. Remember, agents are constantly juggling several clients, and if you're not persistent, you may get lost in the fold. So don't be shy about calling or emailing on a regular basis. The more your agent hears or sees your name, the more likely they are to think of you when a job opportunity arises.
However, you should use your best judgment when it comes to the amount of contact you have with your agent. Calling ten times in one day will probably aggravate your agent, which you definitely want to avoid. When you first sign with your agent, calling once a day is a perfectly acceptable amount. It may sound silly, but calling at the same time each day is a great idea. If your agent knows when to expect your call, he or she may be able to prepare information for you ahead of time.
Again, communication is key. If you're still not sure how often to call or email your agent, just ask! Ask what days and times your agent prefers to speak and what method of communication (i.e. telephone vs. email) your agent prefers to use. This precision and directness shows that you are eager to start working as soon as possible and that you are a client worth keeping.
