Ask InstantCast:
Online Reality TV Applications

online application expert Q: I've been seeing so many and applications for Reality TV shows popping up online. What is the etiquette for applying to these shows off of Craig's List, MySpace, or from the show's website?

A: The rules for applying to a Reality show online are pretty much the same as when you send in a paper application. The most important thing you can do when submitting your initial application is to follow the rules to the letter. Reality casting directors are extremely busy, and they'll dismiss any applications out of hand that don't fit the format. Because of the casual nature of the internet, many people put less effort into online applications, but it's all the same to the producers of the show.

One thing Reality TV producers hate is multiple applications. Some people think that because an application is online, it works like a voting system, so they send in multiple applications. This will get you immediately disqualified. Filling out multiple online applications in different ways in an attempt to cover your bases also doesn't work. It might increase your chances in the short term, but as soon as they realize you've tried to fool them you'll be out of the running.

Another common thing people do on the internet is have friends and family members send emails and messages endorsing their application. Producers find this extremely tacky, and they won't give you a second thought. You should also only send in the pictures specified in the listing. Usually they want one body shot and one clear picture of your face. They don't want scans or digitized versions of professional headshots, either, given how different people usually look from their photos. Clear pictures from a regular digital camera are preferable. If the site has an option to upload a video audition, make sure the video file matches the technical specifications perfectly. If something is even slightly wrong with it, Reality TV show producers won't bother troubleshooting.

If you've already applied to a show online, don't try to follow up with further emails, calls, or letter s to the production office. They will either be ignored, or will annoy producers enough to immediately take you out of the running. Their job is to narrow down the huge pool of applicants, and anything extra you do outside of your application just makes eliminating you easier.

I wasn't aware of this. I thought like many people that the first application might have been displaced. So tenacity not perseverance rules here!

Q:

I finally attended an audition last week. I studied my monologue for a few days and was ready to show them my talent. Then, when the casting director called me in to perform, they took one look at me and gave me a whole different monologue to read ice cold! I was so nervous an unprepared that I blew it. How can I better prepare for a cold read next time?

A:

A cold read can be a scary thing. You've never read the script in your life, so how can you give your best performance? Well, you don't have to...
