Are You Up to the Challenge? Take a Risk with Your Career.

Casting Director Renee GodboutStuck in an acting rut? Casting Director Renee Godbout encourages you to try something entirely new

Putting yourself out there can be more frightening than watching a horror film on Halloween night! Most actors aren’t exactly shy, but not everyone is an extrovert.

Playing a character and saying someone else’s lines can be daunting at first but it is not exactly risky. So what risks should you take? Well, it is always important to remain versatile, and trying things you’ve never had the courage to try is as versatile as it gets.

Here are some things you can do to get out of your comfort zone and expand your repertoire:

Stand-Up Comedy. The idea personally petrifies me, but I’ve been told from actors how much it energizes them. It’s an interactive experience with an audience that is very unique, and you’ll never be frightened of public speaking again!

A One-Man Show. I know a very talented actress who has written and performed two one-woman shows. When you’re the only one on the stage with no one else to act off of, your true talent shines through. It also becomes a more personal experience as an actor. The audience becomes your scene partner.

Improv. With no safety net, you’re forced to roll with the punches and think of things on the fly. Natural comedians will shine and working with other people can be just as important as what you yourself put out. There are professional improv groups performing all over the country.

Performance Art. It’s a great way to purge your emotions and express your art in movement. Words are sometimes less important. In performance art, the movement of your body tells the story.

Taking a risk is all about trying something new and gaining confidence. Even if you decide that you’re not cut out to be a professional comedian, the confidence you’ve earned will translate into your acting!

I love a challenge so I don't think I would have a problem taking a risk at trying something I've never had the courage to try.

Ibelieve that stretching yourself to the limit and going outside the box can help you grow and even learn more about yourself. It's not easy but certainly worthwhile. You'll become a better actor because of it.

Risks and change tend to be frightening, yet once you have conquered them you have opened a whole new world and learned more than you ever would had you stayed in the same-old-thing. Thanks Renee for an article that inspires us to push harder and take that step outside our comfort zone. ~ Janet
