By Renee Godbout
So you've decided to be an actor. What do you need to get started in pursuing your dreams? Here are the 8 must-haves for any actor starting out.
Research Materials
Read Variety and/or The Hollywood Reporter to keep up to date on what's happening in the entertainment industry and what films and TV shows are about to go into production. Get a copy of The Ross Reports, a comprehensive listing of casting directors and production companies.
Get a Good Headshot
Have a variety of headshots with different looks. And make sure you get postcards as well. It's a quicker and less expensive way to get noticed by casting directors! If you have trouble finding photographers or printers, check out the InstantCast Resource Center.
Have a Varied Wardrobe
When going in for auditions, dress the part! Since you never know until the last minute what the part is, have a wide variety of clothes to choose from. Always keep an extra outfit handy for a quick change. Different looks help accentuate your versatility.
Have a Cell Phone
And make sure you answer it! Auditions and castings happen at the last minute. If you miss that call, they might fill the spot with someone else!
Take Acting Classes
Everyone should take them! Whether you've been acting for one year or fifty years, it never hurts to get trained.
Immerse Yourself in the Industry
Go to the theater, watch TV, and see movies. You can learn a lot just by watching other actors!
Be Prepared to Struggle
A very small percentage of actors are able to make a good living working as an actor. Having a second job or a good trust fund helps.
Be Motivated
You have to be willing to struggle, if that means having the chance to follow your dreams and act. It has to be your passion!
