Casting Director Renee Godbout gives you surprising five new ways to spread the word about yourself
By Renee Godbout
How many times have you heard the phrase, “It’s all about who you know.” Well, that’s the truth. Networking is important in all careers and especially for actors. It’s easiest to do if you live in Los Angeles or New York City, but that doesn’t mean the opportunities aren’t out there…films are shot all over the country!
Here are some unexpected places you might just meet someone who can help you along with your career.
1. Fashion shows. It’s no secret that the front rows are reserved for VIPs. One of those VIPs might just be the person you need.
2. Film/TV premieres. Most likely these would have to be in Los Angeles or New York City but going to a premiere or the party afterwards is the best way to meet the right people. It doesn’t even have to be the big flashy premiere. Ask your Production Assistant friend to invite you to the cast and crew screening where influential production people will be in attendance.
3. Weddings. Everybody’s happy at a wedding and more than happy to help out a fellow friend of a friend. And yes, I’ve cast people I’ve met at weddings!
4. Film festivals. They’re all over the country! I just went to one in Wilmington, NC and saw Jason Ritter and his co-star, who is also the director, do a Q&A after the screening. Directors and other production staff like to go to film festivals and share their work.
5. Holiday and wrap parties. Again, ask that Production Assistant friend for one more favor and be at the place where all the production staff is in good spirits and filled with enough wine to talk to anyone. Just make sure you catch them when they’re only one or two glasses in so they’ll remember you!
